This photograph came in a very decorative photo folder and additionally there was a smaller photograph of the same person. The folder and the large photograph had a colonial feel to it and we wanted to display both photo’s in the same package, but we also didn’t want a lot of dead space in the piece. By using a step cut on the matte to fit the decorative border of the larger photo, and an inlay of a matte that matched the color of the photo folder, we were able to use the dead space while enhancing the overall piece. This inlay created a “canopy” of sorts for the larger photo, with the inner corners of the inlay matching the step cut of the main matte. In order to use some of the space at the bottom of the piece, we used a cameo cutout from the photo folder cover which was being discarded. This was adhered to the main matte.
