Canal Street and the Cotton Weaving House

Lawrence Massachusetts is situated approximately 30 miles north of Boston, in the Merrimack Valley.  The city is known as “The Immigrant City” due to the fact the the majority of it’s early citizens were immigrants who worked in the textile mills. The Lawrence mills were the site of the infamous Bread and Roses strike of 1912.  During this strike the militia was called out to restore order due to extensive rioting.

The Cotton Weaving House:

The Cotton Weaving House is located at 181 Canal Street, in the heart of Lawrence’s mill district. The building is located near the intersection of Canal and Union streets and is currently the only building on this section of Canal Street.  The Weaving House was originally built to weave fabric and make patterns for the textile mills of Lawrence. In previous years, the weaving house was the location of KGR, a clothing manufacturer.  The building is currently used as a home for a number of small professional businesses, warehouse space, as well as several retail operations including Lasting Impressions Picture Framing.
